UCU Edinburgh workload survey – November/December 2013

  • 86% of academic staff work more than their contracted hours, 85% college support staff and 75% of support groups staff.
  • 48% of academic staff always work at the weekend, 12% and 8% of support staff.
  • 74% of academic staff always work outside of 9 to 5, 65% and 53% of support staff. Only 3% of respondents never work out of hours.
  • Staff reported taking an average 72% of leave entitlement with 34% of respondents taking 50% or less.
  • 34% (79) respondents made an additional comment. 40% of academics commented versus 15% and 19% support staff.

  • 88% of academic staff work more than their contracted hours, 62% college support staff and 53%% of support groups staff.
  • Staff at grade 7 work an additional three hours, grade 8 six hours, grade 9 eleven hours and grade 10 fourteen hours.
  • 43% of academic staff always work at the weekend, 14% and 7% of support staff.
  • 68% of academic staff always work outside of 9 to 5, 38% and 40% of support staff. Only 2% of respondents never work out of hours.
  • 24% of respondents report taking 50% or less of their leave entitlement.
  • 29% (38) respondents made an additional comment. 28% of academics commented versus 6% and 4% support staff.

Zero Hours Survey

UCU Edinburgh zero hours survey – November 2012/January 2013

  • 83% of respondents are tutors.
  • 26% tutor at postgraduate level and 44% at undergraduate level.
  • 40% of respondents do not get paid for preparation time.
  • 48% of respondents do not get paid for marking.
  • 34% of respondents have no office space. The rest have space of varying types and suitability.
  • 31% of respondents have been on zero hour contracts for four or more years.
  • 55% of respondents do not receive increments. 26% do with the remaining 20% in post less than a year.
  • 66% of respondents have received some specific training.
