Edinburgh University postgraduates, postdoctorates, and casualised members!
Are you members of UCU (or interested in becoming members) and want to be part of a postgraduate/postdoctoral/anticasualisation network within UCU Edinburgh? The UCU postgrad and postdoc network gathers postgraduates, postdoctorates, and other casualised staff, from various departments and schools, organising within UCU for both teaching-related matters and broader issues concerning postgraduates, early-career researchers, and casualised staff.
The network holds regular meetings, which currently take place at 3 pm (until 4 pm) on selected Wednesdays at the UCU offices at 12 Buccleuch Street (EH8 9JR – ring the bell for access). Dates for the current year are:
All are welcome to attend (and you don’t need to be a union member to come along) – tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided!
Current organisers of the postgrad and postdoc network are Maria D’Aria (SPS), Vivek Santayana (LLC), Sarah Stewart (LLC), and Nikolay Ogryzko (QMRI).
What about fees?
From October 2017 UCU offers free membership to PhD students.
Most postgraduate students, even those who are employed by the University as tutors, demonstrators, or research assistants, will fall within the lowest subscription band of £0 – £5,000. This carries a subscription fee of only £1 per month, since postgraduate student members pay only the appropriate national subscription rate: no local subscription is charged! For postdoctorates or other casualised staff who fall within the same subscription band, the fees still only come to £1.37 per month. A more detailed breakdown of subscription fees is available here.
